What is it like to love somebody? asks Gratitude.
It's like being brought to life in a flash of something brilliant
that didn't exist for you before, I answer.
What is it like to be loved in return? asks Happiness.
It's like being heard after a lifetime of never being able to speak,
being seen after a length of perpetual darkness, I answer.
What is it like to love and to lose? asks Sadness.
I take a long time thinking how to explain it but then
in the place of Sadness is Loneliness, with the same question.
It is like hearing every goodbye ever said to me,
all at once, is all I can come up with.
Loneliness doesn't linger like it used to,
and in front of me is a wall made entirely of window
letting in a flood of daylight and
Peace knocks gently at the door, no questions.
